IFC-Digital Financing: Transforming Access and Inclusion

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) works with private sector companies, financial institutions, and governments to mobilize long-term financing that promotes sustainable economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction. Through the provision of loans, equity investments, guarantees, and advisory services, IFC supports access to finance—particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), women-owned and women-led businesses, youth entrepreneurs, and climate-focused enterprises. By strengthening financial markets and supporting private sector development, IFC plays a critical role in expanding inclusive and resilient economic opportunities in developing countries.

🔹 IFC SME Growth Loan

The IFC SME Growth Loan is designed to support established small and medium-sized enterprises operating in sectors such as manufacturing, agribusiness, trade, and services. The facility typically provides financing ranging from USD 250,000 to USD 5,000,000, with loan tenures of three to seven years. Interest rates are structured on a market-based, long-term pricing model, which may be either fixed or floating and are administered through IFC partner commercial banks. The financing is intended to support business expansion, the acquisition of equipment, and the optimization of working capital. Eligible enterprises are required to have a minimum operating history of two to three years, provide audited or management financial statements, and demonstrate positive cash flow. The loan is not issued directly by IFC but is delivered through partner commercial banks as part of IFC’s indirect SME financing framework.

🔹 IFC Women-Owned SME Loan Program

The IFC Women-Owned SME Loan Program is aimed at supporting women-owned or women-led small and medium-sized enterprises, defined as businesses with at least 51% female ownership or those led by women in senior management positions. The program offers financing ranging from USD 50,000 to USD 1,000,000, with loan tenures of up to five years, and is implemented through IFC partner financial institutions. A key feature of the program is the provision of preferential pricing, alongside business advisory and training support designed to strengthen enterprise capacity and sustainability. The financing is intended to facilitate business growth, inventory financing, and asset acquisition, thereby enhancing the participation and competitiveness of women entrepreneurs in the private sector.

🔹 IFC Youth & Startup Expansion Facility

The IFC Youth and Startup Expansion Facility is designed to support youth-owned small and medium-sized enterprises, targeting entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35 years whose businesses are in the early growth stage rather than the ideation phase. The facility provides financing ranging from USD 25,000 to USD 500,000, with loan tenures of two to five years, and is implemented through partner microfinance banks, fintech lenders, and leasing firms. Key eligibility conditions include the presence of a strong and viable business model, reliance on cash-flow-based lending assessments, and, where applicable, the use of partial credit guarantees to mitigate lending risk. The facility aims to expand access to finance for youth entrepreneurs and support sustainable business growth through inclusive financial intermediation.

🔹 IFC Climate-Smart SME Loan

The IFC Climate-Smart SME Loan is designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises that are adopting environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly solutions. The facility targets eligible projects including renewable energy investments, energy efficiency upgrades, and climate-resilient agribusiness initiatives. Financing under this program typically ranges from USD 100,000 to USD 3,000,000, with loan tenures of up to ten years, reflecting the long-term nature of green investments. To enhance affordability and encourage uptake, the facility may offer longer grace periods and a lower effective cost of financing through blended finance mechanisms, implemented via IFC partner financial institutions. The program aims to promote sustainable private sector development while supporting climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
